Is There a Free BIMI Certificate?

No. There is no free BIMI certificate. VMCs and CMCs are issued by certificate authorities after they verify your organization, and that verification is paid work. You can set up everything around the certificate for free, and the cheapest real certificate is a CMC from $649 a year.

Why BIMI Certificates Cost Money

A mark certificate is a statement by a third party that your organization is real and that your logo belongs to you. To make that statement, the certificate authority has to check things:

• That your company exists and who it is
• That you control the domain
• For a VMC, that your logo is a registered trademark owned by you
• For a CMC, that your logo has been in public use for at least 12 months

People do that checking, and the authority carries the responsibility if it gets it wrong. That cost is why the certificate is not free, and why no one can legitimately hand you a working one at no charge.

What Is Free

Most of the BIMI project can be done without paying anything:

What Is Not Free

• The certificate itself, whether VMC or CMC
• The authority's verification of your organization, your logo, and your trademark or logo use
• Reaching DMARC enforcement, if your mail is complicated. That takes time even when the tools are free.

Beware of "Free VMC Download" Results

Search results for "vmc download free" or "free vmc certificate" can lead to files and offers that are not what they claim. Here is the plain fact: a mark certificate is issued to one organization for its own domain and logo. A file someone else holds, or a sample certificate, is not valid for your domain, and mailbox providers will not show your logo because of it.

Before you use any certificate offer, check three things:

1. Is it issued by a recognized certificate authority?
2. Is your organization name and domain in the certificate?
3. Does it expire on a date that makes sense for the term you paid for?

If the answer to any of them is no, it will not work.

The Cheapest Real Way to Get BIMI

Choose by your trademark situation:

No registered trademark: a CMC from $649 a year. It needs evidence that your logo has been in public use for at least 12 months. It shows your logo in the inbox without the Gmail blue checkmark. See BIMI without a trademark.

A Two-Minute Way to Decide What to Do Next

Answer these in order:

1. Is your DMARC policy p=quarantine or p=reject at 100%? If not, start there. It costs nothing but time, and it protects your domain whether or not you ever buy a certificate.
2. Does your logo exist as a valid SVG Tiny P/S file? If not, convert it with the free converter.
3. Do you hold a registered trademark for the logo? If yes, a VMC is the full option. If no, a CMC is your route.
4. Can you show 12 months of public logo use? If yes, you can apply for a CMC now. If no, wait until you can.

What You Get Free With a Certificate

Is BIMI Worth Paying For?

Honest answer: it depends on what you want from it.

What BIMI does: shows your logo next to your emails in supporting inboxes, and with a VMC in Gmail, adds a checkmark. It makes your mail easier to recognize and harder to impersonate, and it rewards you for finishing DMARC enforcement.

What it does not do: guarantee more opens or better inbox placement. You may see claims about open-rate lifts. Treat them as unproven for your own list unless you measure it, for example by comparing opens before and after on one sending stream.

Who gets the most from it: brands whose customers get frequent email from them (banks, retailers, SaaS, marketplaces) and organizations that are impersonated often.

Who may not need it yet: organizations with a small sending volume, or those still at p=none. Get DMARC enforced first. That protects you whether or not you buy a certificate.
