Which DigiCert Certificate Do You Need?

The choice comes down to one question: do you hold a registered trademark for your logo?

Choose a VMC if your logo is a registered trademark (USPTO, EUIPO, or another recognized office) and you want the blue checkmark Gmail shows next to verified senders. The VMC is the more complete option, and it costs $100 a year more than a CMC at the starting price.

Choose a CMC if you have no registered trademark, or the registration is still pending, but your logo has been in public use for at least 12 months. A CMC shows your logo in the inbox without the checkmark. You can move up to a VMC later once the trademark is registered, and your DMARC and BIMI setup stays the same.

What You Need Before You Order

A certificate does nothing until the rest of the setup is in place. Check these first:

• DMARC at enforcement. Your policy must be p=quarantine or p=reject, applied to 100% of mail (pct=100). A policy of p=none will not work. Check yours with the DMARC Checker.
• Aligned SPF and DKIM. Your legitimate mail has to pass DMARC, or enforcement will block it.
• Your logo as SVG Tiny P/S. This is a restricted SVG profile. Convert your logo free with the BIMI SVG Converter.
• Proof for validation. For a VMC, your trademark registration details. For a CMC, evidence that your logo has been in use for 12 months.
• Organization details. Your legal company name, country and a business contact.

Publishing Your BIMI Record

Once the certificate is issued, you publish one DNS TXT record at default._bimi.yourdomain.com:

• v=BIMI1 is the version.
• l= is the HTTPS address of your SVG logo.
• a= is the HTTPS address of your certificate file. It is what lets Gmail show the checkmark with a VMC.

You can generate the record with the BIMI Generator. Mailbox providers can take up to 48 hours to start showing your logo after you publish.
